Population II is a band committed to its disengagement, working with unwavering consistency to refine a powerful yet unpretentious sound. The trio, composed of singer/drummer Pierre-Luc Gratton, guitarist/keyboardist Tristan Lacombe, and bassist Sébastien Provençal, are masters of both improvisational madness and refined composition, offering a heavy psychedelic rock embellished with the feverish rhythms of funk, the philosophy of jazz, the overflowing energy emanating from the early stirrings of punk, and a marked love for minor scales reminiscent of heavy metal's heritage. Adding to this amalgamation is Pierre-Luc's distinctive voice, who also writes the introspective, nostalgic, and offbeat lyrics, further reinforcing the band's unique identity.

Their sources of inspiration are many and far between, extending beyond music: the garage rock and psychedelic funk scenes of late 1960s Detroit, the Canterbury scene of the same era, German experimental rock of the 1970s, and Miles Davis's electric period all collide, bound together by the marshy landscape of Pointe-Calumet and, above all, by the deep friendship and undeniable chemistry between these three elements. The band has always kept its distance from the Montreal music scene, preferring to cultivate its idiosyncratic flavor in its own corner of the world. The result is music that transcends time, sheltered from the trends dominating the current indie scene; an unfathomable artifact emerging from the depths of the marshes, defined as much by its hazy atmospheres as by its cathartic bursts.

Population II's origins go back a long way and are inextricably linked to its members' teenage memories. After years of jamming to the point of developing a near-telepathic connection, the band began recording a handful of independent releases that quickly caught the attention of the American record label Castle Face Records. This led to the release of À la ô Terre, their first album on the label, in 2020. The following two years were marked by a series of shows in Canada and the United States.

Population II returned in October 2023 with Électrons libres du québécois, their second album, this time released on Bonsound. A bit more direct than its predecessor, this new opus offers a natural progression of the sound established on the trio's previous releases, showcasing a sharp sense of composition and undeniable mastery of their instruments. Several tours followed, including opening for Osees.

Riding a creative wave, the trio returned the following year with a mini-album titled Serpent Échelle in the spring and a split with the punk band Mulch in the fall. Following this prolific run of releases, Population II won GAMIQ awards for Rock Album of the Year and Rock EP of the Year, in addition to earning its first ADISQ nomination. This paved the way for Maintenant Jamais, their third full-length album, on which they skillfully blended their diverse formative influences to create fourteen transgressive and catchy tracks.
